CCTV vs smart doorbell: what coverage do you need?
A smart doorbell watches one approach and makes visitor conversations easy. A multi-camera system covers more angles and can record locally, but installation, maintenance and privacy responsibilities are greater.

Start by drawing the areas you need to see: gate, porch, driveway, side access and shared corridor. One doorbell cannot identify events outside its field of view, while many cameras placed badly still leave blind spots.
Check whether the camera records locally without a subscription, what happens when internet service fails, and how long security updates are promised. Change default passwords and enable multi-factor authentication where offered.
Quick verdict
Choose a camera system for several approaches, continuous local recording or a detached property. Choose a doorbell for front-door visitors and parcel alerts. Many homes need a doorbell plus one carefully placed outdoor camera, not a large system.
At a glance
| Camera / CCTV system | Smart video doorbell | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | One or many chosen angles | Front-door approach |
| Recording | Local recorder or memory card possible | Memory card, hub or cloud depends on model |
| Visitor talk | Available on some cameras | Core function |
| Power | Mains, PoE or battery | Battery or doorbell wiring |
| Installation | More planning and cabling | Usually simpler |
What each option is
Camera / CCTV system. A security camera can be a standalone Wi-Fi unit with microSD storage or part of a wired recorder system. Models differ in night vision, weather rating, field of view and recording mode.
Smart video doorbell. A camera, button, microphone and speaker aimed at the entrance. It sends call and motion alerts and may require a hub, app account or cloud plan.
Category by category
Coverage and evidence
Position cameras to capture faces and the direction of travel without pointing unnecessarily into a neighbour’s private space. Doorbells excel at people approaching the door but rarely cover side gates or parked cars well.
Storage
Local recording avoids a recurring cloud fee but the card or recorder can be damaged or stolen. Cloud storage can preserve off-site clips but adds cost and account-security exposure.
Network failure
Confirm whether recording continues locally when broadband fails. A battery model still needs charging; a wired model needs sensible cable protection and possibly backup power.
Concrete examples
TP-Link Malaysia lists the Tapo C520WS with 2K QHD, IP66 protection, Wi-Fi/Ethernet and microSD up to 512GB. Its D230S1 doorbell lists 2K 5MP video, a 160° diagonal field, IP64 protection and hub-based local storage up to 512GB.
Privacy
Use the narrowest useful field of view, restrict account access, update firmware and set a retention period. Tell household members and visitors where recording is likely.
Who each suits
Cost & availability in Malaysia
Budget for storage media, a recorder, installation, power and possible cloud subscriptions. Verify what is included: some doorbells require a separate hub or chime, while wired camera quotes may exclude cabling, storage drives and configuration.
Our recommendation
Solve the blind spots on paper first. Buy the smallest system that captures the required approaches reliably, stores evidence in a form you can retrieve, and receives software updates.
